OK folks let's try another color assignment.
A Split complementary Color Harmony.
First, for just about everyone this next stuff is really elementary.
Still I think it bears repeating.
We need to define what types of colors we see on a color wheel.
By that I mean whether they're primary, secondary or tertiary.
We all know:
Primary colors are: red, yellow, blue
Secondary colors are the ones derived by mixing two primaries.
Orange (yellow and red), Green (yellow and blue), Purple (blue and red)
Tertiary colors are the colors derived by mixing a secondary color with a
primary.
Red orange (red and orange), Yellow orange (orange and yellow), Yellow green
(green and yellow) etc., etc.
Those are the colors on the color wheel included and the ones found on most
color wheels.
So a split complementary color harmony is done by using three consecutive
colors on the color wheel. For instance, Green, Yellow green, and blue green.
The complementary color is the color directly across from the middle color.
In this instance green is the middle color and the complementary to green is
red.
Usually the three colors you choose are the dominant colors in the work and
the
complementary is use for dramatic accents. You can use all the neutral colors
in
between the three colors and the compliments. For neutrals mix the complementary
color with one of the three. You can use the true complementary color to mix
the
neutrals - like yellow green's compliment would be a violet or maybe an aliz.
crimson.
Experiment with this.
It sounds a little complicated but give it a try. It'll be fun. Don't worry
about the
"rules". Try to stay in the boundaries of the assignment but don't
fret over some
deviation from it.
The model will be "ECM shadow", it is a wonderful pose and lends
itsself well to
this assignment. A copy of it will be in photos in the assignment R&D 234
folder.
There will be a slightly larger version in the files folders, assignments, R&D,
R&D 234.
I've also included an example of a maxfield parrish painting that basically
uses a split
complementary color harmony. See what you can do.
Use any color medium you wish.
And if you only want to draw the model - please do so.
Let's just have fun.
Now let's draw and paint.
