Here's the next assignment. Hope you like it.
R&D 232 Assignment - A simple shape study and a finished drawing (or two).
This is a skill building exercise and a chance to work from one of our newest
models, PJ, plus using a great pose from Ben's portfolio.
As we know all things, including the human body, can be drawn using one of
the
basic shapes (square, sphere, cone etc).
One of the renaissance masters, Luca Cambiaso, shows this very effectively
in a
drawing he did called group of figures (see examples).
While researching photos for this assignment I came across a pose that Ben
had
created based on the Dying Slave sculpture by Michelangelo.
What a great chance to apply some simple basic drawing principles to recreate
our own version of Dying Slave using our own model.
I also couldn't resist using one of the new poses by model PJ. They are all
very
nice and dramatically lit.
For our purposes I did lighten the shadow area on Model PJ just a bit to reveal
a little more detail of form.
The assignment is to create drawings based on simple forms like those done
by
Cambiaso. Be sure to indicate the shadow side of the shapes. Then take what we
learned by doing the simple shapes and do a finished rendering of one or both
(or more) of
each of these super poses.
This exercise is a great way to study the subtle shifts of angle and direction
that are present in most model's poses. I find it very valuable sometimes to
do a quick
little sketch like this during a life session if i'm having trouble with a pose.
I hope this will be fun for everyone in every skill level.
I created a simple drawing as described above based on Ben's pose just to give
you an idea of what I am talking about.
I also uploaded a photo of Dying Slave by Michelangelo.
