Happy warm weather!!!! at least it is for me.
And warm weather always brings out the best in me. And given my new excitement I think I have project here that is going to reflect said excitement.
While this project may end up turning out some very interesting and appealing paintings, I am proposing this project as more of an excerise than a call to make a masterpiece.
Think, self-expression, think self-discovery. Think outside the box, the palette and your normal jar filled with paintbrushes.
This time you need to work on the largest piece of board, canvas, or paper you can work with.... (I realize we all have our limits... there are many things that dictate our limits. I am not too worried about what the reasons are, but those limitations exsist and thus I have tried to make adjustments so that hopefully we can all get the same basic effect from this assignment.)
So, before I digress anymore about limitations and the like let me tell you what you are going to need for this one. (I hope it is not too much of a stretch for anyone... if it is, just do what you can do.)
Get the largest piece of what ever you are going to paint on. Then you are going to need a house painting brush. (this is where you will need to do a little math) this is where I have made an adjustment for those limitations I was talking about. If you have a four foot board, you will want a four inch brush. And if you have a 3 foot board you will want a 3 inch brush and so one... but now matter how small your surface is I don't want any one to work with less than a 1 inch brush. AND if you feel comfortable working on a smaller board with a bigger brush than I suggested, then "good on yah!"
Feel free to use as many colors as you want. But if you only use black that is fine too.
I suppose that brings into question what you are going to use as paint. I would suggest anything you have around your house... or get some cheap tempra paint... some stuff that you can use and not be afraid of wasting a bit by slopping it around. If you are working on a smaller sheet or canvas, or if you just won the lotto, I guess you could use some of your traditional artists colors, but for this one, I am not sure I would do that.
If it turns out that you like what happens here and you want to do more you may want to make friends with your local paint store manager and see if he can give you a sweet deal on paint that they mixed as the wrong color. Sometimes that paint can be had at a fraction of the cost.
Now I want to talk about our pose... I don't usually wait this long to address the model, and so I apologize to anyone that may have wondered. I have choosen a pose by Sarah. Those of us familar with Sarah's poses know that she has an expressive physique. And the pose for this assignment features a really wonderful arch in her abdomen.
I want to take this time to thank Sarah for this pose and mention that I hope that she will see fit to add more to her folder when she can. (that goes for all the models) (hehehe)
As I mentioned I want you to use a house painting brush. I don't want anyone getting caught up in the details... not at first anyway.. and if you don't end up with any that is ok... because remember this is about self-expression. Find the gesture of this pose. Mark on your painting surface with BOLD brush strokes... see how few you can use.
As you nail down the gesture and become more familar as to how this brush will react, you may find that you can go in and some finer strokes...
This project is not about capturing a photographic likeness. This is about capturing the gesture. The soul of this pose.. this model.
It is time to let your hair down and pull out all the stops.
Please feel free to ask any questions if I have confused you too much.
This project is due June 27th. That is a little while off, but I know you may have to go searching a little for materials.
Now! LET'S DRAW!!!!
PS: Don't be afraid to take your stuff outside if you need more space.
