R&D 214

Shhhh! Don't tell anyone, I am suppose to be working hard on a deadline... Well, I am actually, but I had to get away for a sec. Posting a new R&D is the best I can do at the moment. I am seeing all the good stuff that is happening with that pose Ronnie did in his garden. I am chomping at the bit to get a chance with that pose... (eventually I suppose)

Anyway -R&D 214. Of course R&D is where we Research and Develop, so this time around we are going to be doing a contour drawing. We have done them before, but this time we are going to add at least one twist.

By contour this time I mean the contours of the curves not on the edges but, inside the figure... Like across the skin surface. So DO NOT outline this drawing. (like I always do) I should say that you will end up defining the edges as most of the contour lines that go, say across the abdomen eventually follow the surface around to the back and at the point that you cannot see it anymore is the edge of the figure.

We have done these drawings where we don't take the pencil off the page, well this is not one of those times, though I might think that it would be on the page more than it will be away from the surface. The twist is this; when you see the pose, I think you will understand better, but I never want your hand that is holding your drawing instrument to stop moving till you are done.

Keep it moving along the contours of the body, some are obvious, because there are flods and things, others you will have to make up... Think of a topographical map. All the wiggly lines on a topo map represent changes in elevation of the earth's surface. You will similarly want to follow those to make this drawing.

Unlike a topo map, I don't see you using only the concentric lines like on the map which I think they use because a map it a strict top view. We are not dealing with a strict view and unlike the view of a little part of the earth we see on a topo map, when we look at the figure we see the edges. We see that even the concentric lines to indeed wrap around the other side of the figure.

Have I made this confusing enough?

So draw only lines, no shading. (there will be a certain amount of shading that will naturally happen as line converge near the edge) And keep your pencil moving. Infact if you can use a large sheet of paper it will be easier, as I would recomend that you draw more with your arm than your wrist or worse yet, your fingers. Let's make big sweeping, smooth musical movements and lines... I think if you put on some of your favorite symphonic music and pretend like you are conducting you will acheieve your best results.

Oh I should mention the pose. It is a nice pose of a member that I must say I don't know, she goes only by TKC. I wish I could say, more, she has a great body and will be perfect for this assignment. At the moment there is only one pose that TKC has posted in her folder, it would be wonderful to see a few more in the near future.

This drawing is due July 30th (2004).

LET'S DRAW!!!
