Life 121

The original suggestion for a reflection exercise (see below) suggested a window.
But it's true that the surface reflecting doesn't have to be a window (i used the glass
door on my stereo rack once). i've also used a christmas tree bulb (boy now that's
a challenge) but it could be a wine bottle or as brian suggests a cd case. i've also seen
(but not drawn) my reflection in a silver gravy pitcher.

so the idea is to find a surface that provides something of a reflection of yourself or a part
of your body (hand holding pencil?). Draw that by just finding the shapes and values you
see and recording them. If you trust the shapes then you should have a strong drawing.

Here is the original suggestion along with a bit of expansion from brian:

Have you ever looked at yourself in a window at night (you would be inside
for this excercise)? If there is any light in the room in which you are, you will see an
image of yourself in the window. The image will have much less detail than you are used
to seeing in a miror. In fact, the amount of light in the room determines how much detail
you will see in your reflection. At some point, the image will just be shapes of light
and shadow and detail sort of falls away. Try to capture that image (sans detail). If you
do not wish to draw your portrait, set up something next to you and draw its reflection. I
would not suggest a nude figure because someone may call the police!

---Ah, this sounds like an interesting exercise. And one does not necessarily
need to use the window either. I have noticed that with some CD covers the same thing
happens, especially if the CD has a booklet with dark colours in it. I would think just
about any smooth glass surface will make a nice reflection under the right circumstances.

We do try to keep a series of different types of assignments rotating and this
is another self-portrait type assignment right on the heels (almost) of an earlier one.
Let's just give this the rest of March to get done.

This life assignment should be fun and a challenge. Good luck.

Let's Draw!
