Fabrication 019

The search of a pose for Figure Fabrication 019 found me in the one folder in the retained section. I found this pose that Clarissa created for us. When I found it was all new to me again while at the same it struck me quite anciently. As I studied it for a few moments it came to me... it was very clear what had to be done.

I trust that you are familar with Michelangelo's Slave sculptures, in particular the unfinshed ones. For a very little background and abbreviated art history lesson, Michelangelo would study a block of marble till he saw the figure inside and then simply begin to chip away all the excess. Some of my favorite pieces of Michelanglo's are sculptures that in reality were not completed. There are three in particular that I would like you to look at. Atlas (AKA The Prisoner, The Young Slave and the Awakeing Slave. They can be seen at http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/article.php?a=3 if you scroll down a little bit.

As I look at this photo of Clarissa, I get the feeling that she is partially encased in some sort of stone.

Draw or paint Clarissa as if she were emerging from something. If it is stone that is fine, if it is something else that is fine, but there is some tenesion in this pose that is dieing to be released. In your drawing, some of her parts may not be as visible as they are in the photo. Study the slave sculptures of Michelangelo and you will begin to see what I am getting at. If you render her as stone that is fine but not necessary.

This project is due on the 4th of December (2004). I know that we are getting in the holiday season and some of us will have the Thanksgiving holiday to deal with between now and then, so see when you can work it in, and then do it.

I should say that I very recently heard from Clarissa, and she is doing fine. you may be remember that I had mentioned that she had been hit by a pick-up truck this summer as she got out of a cab in front of her apartment.

So LET'S DRAW!!!
