hi:
Fabrication #002 was very well done. And I hope that more of you will chime in with your comments and critiques. As I have mentioned many times here, it is very helpful to the artists and i know that that the models, especially the featured model is always interested to hear what is said as well.
So that you don't sit around too long, here is #003.
The folder is set up and ready, a pose by Michael has been choosen. There is a lot that could be said about this pose and the model. I don't know Michael very well but I am pretty sure that if you asked him he would admit that he is nearly in class by himself. And for that we are truly fortunate to have him in our mists as a member model.
He has assumed a very classical pose that is quite dramatic. The lighting is equally dramatic. Because the lighting is handled the way it is in this photo it will be easy for us to continue along with the concept that we introduced in 002.
We are going to want to not be afraid of our darks here. Be bold and let's see some good strong darks. What I want to add to this Fabrication is COLOR!
You may say, "But Royce, there is no color, it is a black and white photo." And that is precisely why it was choosen. This will allow you to be completely unaffected by any color that may have be there had this been a color photo. Go with your instincts, if you feel like the figure should be blue, then by all means make it blue. But if you want to try and make it more realistic and use fleshtones, then that is fine as well.
There is a lot to color in painting from life. And when we are working in person with a model, we can begin to see lots of colors as we study what is going one in both the lights and the shadows. Colors are often reflected on the figure that color it as well as sometimes the skin may simply look blue. (especially if the studio is too cold).
But the problem with most photography is that all that subtly with the color of light coming off the model is gone. so we mostly only see the color that matches the former Crayola Crayon color "flesh".
We have given you a few extra days here now. The deadline will be Sunday night the 25th (May 2003). The hope is that the extra weekend time will be of some help to most of you.
LET"S DRAW!
